Alligators

When I was 13 my family went on a mission trip to Thailand. I’m not sure why we thought it was a good idea to (attempt to) evangelize to people who are very peacefully and happily Buddhist, but we tried anyway. We were a loud, proud Southern Evangelical family from Texas and that’s kind of what everyone we knew did during the summers. We lived near a rural school and taught English. I got the idea to create this rug because some of the local students couldn’t pronounce my sister Allison’s name and thought it sounded like the English word Alligator. It is a sweet memory of the people there and a childhood recollection.

This design was hand-drawn by me before hooking. I used wool and acrylic yarn from many sources for this rug – some from Michael’s, some purchased at an open studios event in Maine, some donated to a local artists’ guild. I created this rug in community, with a close-knit circle of artist friends in Milton and at an artist retreat in Maine.
