Map of Connections

This piece started as 25 hooked and braided abstract designs on a notebook-sized sheet of paper.  They all fit together perfectly!  I was thinking about how both threads and people are connected when I drew the design.  I decided to use 5 different values  within each of the 5 different colors and have them meld together in a center design – the bigger picture meaning of how we are all connected on some level.

After hooking and braiding around each segment, I placed them together on a lovely piece of deep blue silk from my friend Jackie Abrams-but they didn’t fit together at all with the exception of two designs.

We are all connected but on different levels – sometimes strongly and at other times weakly and our connections change with time, experiences, wisdom, and age.  I learned some lessons on being more careful with my drawing but respecting all types of connections whether it’s fabric or people.

Artist Statement

“Threads and Textiles Re-Imagined” represents my work using wool, Charmeuse silk, wool and silk yarns, velvet, and crushed taffeta to complete work that tells a story, or represents nature.

Some of the fiber techniques I use were developed years ago to make functional items,  bringing warmth and comfort to early homes. Now I’m reworking these techniques to honor the past, but my designs are more contemporary.   In addition I want to raise awareness of environmental and social justice issues in my work.

Finished pieces may be three dimensional and may be made more visually exciting by the addition of LED lighting from within the work.
